Help, I'm Being Oppressed!

So Rick Perry's wife went to South Carolina this week to campaign for hubby. Most sane, well-informed people would say his shaky debate performances in recent weeks knocked him off his GOP frontrunner perch (not to mention his lack of sufficient hatred for brown people).

Not so his loyal helpmeet. She's sure it's due to his membership in an oppressed, um, majority:

Speaking at North Greenville University in South Carolina on Thursday, Anita Perry, the wife of GOP candidate Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), admitted “it’s been a rough month” for her husband’s campaign. “We’ve been brutalized and eaten up and chewed up in the press,” she said.

“It is a comfort to know that I am in this place where I can feel the presence of God. We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party,” she said. “So much of that is, I think they look at him because of his faith.”

Is she serious? Perry grew up in the United Methodist Church, which is about as mainstream as you can get. He's recently started attending a non-denominational evangelical megachurch, which should only endear him further to the religious conservative wing of the Republican party.

The funny thing is, she makes it clear that she believes God is a right-winger.

In a 15-minute speech filled with Biblical references, Perry spoke at length about how God has called her husband and other “true conservatives” to run.

If that's the case, why is Perry tanking in the polls? If God called him, wouldn't God want him to win?

I love how conservatives constantly accuse other people of playing the "race card" or the "class warfare" card, all the while crying about how oppressed they themselves are. Mrs. Perry, you and your husband are white Christians. He's the governor and you are the first lady of Texas. You are privileged beyond the imagining of most people in the US. If you think you and your husband are being "brutalized", you need a new dictionary.
