UTTERLY OBLIVIOUS TO THE IRONY

Eventually I'm going to sit down and actually read the speech Dick Cheney gave last night, but I keep getting tripped up by the cluelessness of the Cheney coat-holders. This morning it was the first sentence excerpted by Bill Kristol on The Weekly Standard's blog before the speech was delivered. ("Most anyone who is given responsibility in matters of national security quickly comes to appreciate the commitments and structures put in place by others who came before." Really, Dick? Did you?) Now it's this headline for an online transcript of the speech:

Cheney: "We cannot protect this country by putting politics over security, and turning the guns on our own guys"

When I saw that headline at Memeorandum, I assumed it was Think Progress or Media Matters highlighting a particularly ironic Cheney quote. But no -- the headline appeared at the blog of Frank Gaffney's Center for Security Policy -- the group that hosted Cheney's speech and just gave him an award.

These people are utterly unable to grasp the fact that when Cheney said this, he was attacking someone else for something he himself is not only doing, but has now made his life's work. Either they don't understand that or they're very much aware of that and are rubbing our faces in it. Or they simply don't think Democrats are "our own guys" -- i.e., Americans.
