THEIR OWN FACTS

From the Mahablog:

... I almost agree with John Hawkins today. Apparently the SCOTUS is set to discuss whether it will hear the case of Donofrio v. Wells, which challenges Barack Obama's citizenship. I say, hell, let 'em hear the thing. Hawkins writes,

Personally, I hope that they take the case so that they can squash this whole issue once and for all. Barack Obama is an American citizen and if the Supreme Court officially rules that way, then these particular stories will, for the most part, go away.

Where I disagree is that I doubt a SCOTUS ruling will make any difference....

Me too. The right-wing crazies will just declare that the Supreme Court -- yes, the current Supreme Court -- is part of the vast liberal conspiracy.

Preposterous? No more so than Mitt Romney's Republican convention speech, which many right-wing crazies cheered:

But let me ask you — what do you think Washington is right now, liberal or conservative? Is a Supreme Court liberal or conservative that awards Guantanamo terrorists with constitution rights? It's liberal!

It has been reliably reported that, after calling the Roberts court "liberal," Mr. Romney was not forced into a straitjacket and placed on a locked ward so that tests could be conducted to determine the extent of his delusional thinking. In fact, he was permitted to leave the auditorium under his own power and to go about his business, and, although this blog did so, no member of the press -- and certainly no member of the GOP base -- ever questioned his sanity.

UPDATE: Well, now I'm surer than ever that the Obama birth truthers won't shut up even in the unlikely event that the Supreme Court gives this case a full hearing and then rejects it. I see now that Leo Donofrio, who filed the case, isn't in sync with many of the truthers -- he actually believes Obama was born in Hawaii:

...I believe Obama is a United States citizen. I am not questioning his "citizenship", I'm questioning "natural born citizenship". The Constitution uses the two terms, "Citizen" and "Natural Born Citizen" exclusively as they mean different things.

This is from his "Guide to the Legal Challenges of Barack Obama's Candidacy":

...being a "natural born Citizen," here requires meeting both of these two criteria: 1. citizenship must be passed on by the constitutionally pertinent principle of natural law, which assumes that citizenship is inherited from one's father's citizenship and, 2. citizenship must be granted by means of being born in the actual territory of the United States. Accordingly, to maintain the original intention of the Constitution's framers, a U.S. President is to be free of competing allegiances with other nations, from birth onward.

This is nuts, but it's only one kind of nuts. There are 57 varieties of Obama-birth nuttiness out there, many of them focusing on the idea of an overseas birth. So I'm sure that, when this suit fails, a lot of the crazies, even though they're rooting for Donofrio now, because they want a win however they can get one, will say that he approached the question all wrong.
